Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas

Maya Angelou

This book is the third part of the autobiographical narrative of the American poet Maya Angelou, published in 1976 as another literary journey that takes us to an important station in the poet's life: the stage of building the self and trying to reconcile with it. In this book, Maya recounts to us the details of her struggle to support her young son, to form meaningful relationships, and to shape a successful career in the world of entertainment. In the two previous parts Maya took us to different regions we had not known, carrying us to fight many psychological and social battles against racial discrimination and racial supremacy, and in the attempt to overcome poverty and the experiences of rising against oppression and humiliation. But this book takes us along different roads, especially when Maya decides to set out on a journey to tour Europe in an attempt to discover the world, and to discover herself as well. This important part places us before the many situations that made Maya change her name from Marguerite Johnson to Maya Angelou, situations we might describe as the stations that changed her life forever. And so we must face this book with wonder, because we will find these stations similar to many situations we have passed through in our own lives; in some way, Maya takes us by the hand to help us discover ourselves.
